Osteopath near Melrose Park. How Osteopathy care can help you.
If every joint in your body is moving as it was intended to move, and if the joints are stabilised well by the soft tissues supporting them (the muscles, fascia and ligaments), then you generally shouldn’t develop musculoskeletal pain at all unless you have experienced an injury. So why do so many people experience aches and pains? The problem lies in the fact that none of us use our bodies in the ways that they were originally intended to be used – we don’t run, swim, throw, clim or carry all day as we’re designed to. Instead we sit, lay and stand in awkward static positions that result in some of our joints stiffening up, leaving other joints to do all the work. Lets take a look at the spine as an example.…
Your spine is made up of 33 vertebrae and many more joints. When all of these joints are moving as they should be, the workload that is taken on by the spine is distributed optimally – that is, it is shared around evenly so that each joint plays its part and no one particular joint is overworked.
It is after years of prolonged standing, sitting and bad postural habits resulting in many of these joints jamming up, that problems begin to arise. Whilst going about your usual day-to-day activities may not cause any noticeable problems at all, when you try to lift something heavier than you usually would, or bend, move or twist in a way that you haven’t done for a while, because many of the joints have already stiffened up, all of the strain goes to the remaining joints that are still able to move. When this strain is large, or carried out repeatedly you could end up with one or more of the common ‘degenerative’ conditions of the spine, or problems with a disc.
Osteopaths are experts in identifying joints that aren’t moving optimally, and correcting the motion of these joints. By improving joint ‘mobility’ the workload of motion is once again able to be ‘shared around’ evenly to all of your joints and muscles as is intended.
The treatment approach of Osteopath’s has been shown to be effective in the treatment of:
- Neck, shoulder and back pain
- Muscle strains and spasms
- Nerve entrapments including carpal tunnel, sciatica, and trigeminal neuralgia
- Migraines, headaches and jaw pain
- Arthritis and other joint conditions, and
- Sporting injuries
Your first Osteopathic consultation – What to expect?
At your first session, your Osteopath will take your case history to establish when your pain first started, what your symptoms and concerns are and how they may have changed over time, the treatments (if any) you have recieved to date, and the impact your pain may be having on your life.
After learning of the history of your pain, your Osteopath will carry out a hands-on examination, which comprises of various tests of the spine, nervous system, muscles and joints.
After identifying the underlying cause/s (which may or may not require referral for an x-ray, C-T scan or MRI), your Osteopath will set some treatment goals, with the ultimate goal being to restore maximal, pain-free movement to your muscles and joints.
The osteopathy treatment techniques your Osteopath will use in fulfilling this goal include:
- Spinal manipulation (Also known as an ‘adjustment’)
- Joint mobilisation
- Muscle energy technique (MET)
- Soft tissue /massage
- Balanced ligamentous tension (BLT)
- Myofacial release
- Visceral manipulation
- Therapeutic ultrasound
Osteopathic treatment is not painful.
How Osteopathy is Different:
Unlike the conventional approach to medicine, which emphasises the use of pharmaceuticals to mask symptoms, osteopaths take the time required to establish a clear understanding of why your problem developed in the first place, and put into place a series of steps that will attempt to resolve the underlying problem.
All of our Osteopaths have undertaken 5 years of tertiary education- a 3 year Bachelor of Applied Science- Osteopathy, followed by a 2 year Masters of Osteopathy.
There are various styles of Osteopathy. At Ryde Natural Health Clinic, our Osteopaths are structural Osteopaths and
can adapt their technique to suit you.
