Our Story...
Since opening our clinic doors in 2009, the team at Ryde Natural Health Clinic have referred hundreds of our clients to seek out a local Pilates studio to undertake a core training program. Why? Because Pilates improves muscle control, breathing, flexibility, strength and total body awareness, all of which lead to more efficient movement patterns, general postural correctness and a reduced incidence and recurrence of musculoskeletal pain.
When the opportunity arose to open up our very own Pilates studio we visited many studios throughout Sydney to see what others were doing. What we found was that most studios followed one of two models- small classes at a high price ($30+ per class per participant), or large classes at a low price (30+ participants per class).
Not surprisingly, the most common complaint at studios that offered smaller classes at a high price were the prices. Participants would join classes for a few months then drop out for a few months, then join again for a few months on an ongoing basis. Participants never really discovered the benefits of doing Pilates on an ongoing basis as the cost was prohibitive.
The most common complaint at studios that offered large classes was the lack of instructor-participant interaction. With thirty or more participants in the class, participants never received any hands-on corrective feedback from instructors- they were simply ‘lead through a routine’ and had no idea if they were doing things correctly.
We believe that with our Discover Pilates model we have found a balance that suits the needs of our existing clinic clientele as well as the people of North Ryde- We offer relatively small classes (classes are capped at 12 participants) at an affordable price. For those who have a need to or have the coin to afford it, private one on one classes are available at an additional cost.
Small affordable classes. That’s what we aimed for, and I believe that’s what we are offering.
Our mat classes:
If you're brand new to Pilates and are free from injury, I invite you to enrol in one of our free trial classes that are designed for the absolute beginner. Our free trial class is a low impact class designed to introduce basic Pilates principals and the fundamental exercises from which the Pilates method stems.
Once you’ve got the basics you’re ready for our beginner/intermediate classes. Our beginner/intermediate classes are fast flowing medium impact classes that will suit most fitness levels. Props (Swiss ball, chi ball, therabands etc) are used in these classes and the program is varied from week to week to keep things fresh and interesting. Unless you're already very fit and have previous Pilates experience, our beginner/ intermediate classes will keep you busy for at least 12 months.
If you have lots of Pilates experience and are up for a challenge, join one of our Power Pilates classes. Power Pilates is as tough as it gets for Pilates mat classes and like our beginner/intermediate classes, the program is varied week to week.
Pregnancy mat classes:
If you are less than 3 months pregnant and have had no complications, feel free to join any of the above classes taking into account your fitness level. If you are more than 3 months pregnant, join our Pregnancy Pilates classes- they are designed specifically to prepare your body for carrying a growing baby and birthing. Pilates for pregnancy classes are designed to make your pregnancy more comfortable. Using core strengthening exercises focusing on the working relationship of the abdominals, back, diaphragm and pelvic floor muscles, Pilates will improve how you feel, and reduce the chance of pain and injury before, during, and after delivery.
Note: Please consult your health care practitioner prior to commencing a course of exercise when pregnant.
Private classes (mat and reformer):
If you are brand new to Pilates and are injured or are recovering from injury, we recommend that you have a private one-on-one class with one of our instructors prior to enrolling in a group class. To book a private class, call clinic reception on 9878 5021.
Once you’ve tried us (and you like us)- join us! Complete the application form below to become a ‘studio member’ for just $33 a week. You’ll receive unlimited access to over 20 Pilates mat classes per week. In the coming months, we'll be adding Yoga mat and Tai Chi classes to the timetable too, which are all included in the studio member price. You’ll improve your health, have a heap of fun, and make some great friends in the process!

What to wear:
There are a few things to consider when you dress for a Pilates workout. First, make sure your clothes give enough to let you move and stretch fully. Your instructor will need to be able to see your body well enough to see the alignment of you bones and how your muscles are engaging, so while loose is OK, baggy is not. You will also want to avoid baggy clothes because some Pilates exercises could be a bit revealing if your clothes are too loose. In our classes you'll be bare-footed, so no fancy footwear is needed.
What to bring:
At Discover Pilates we like to keep things simple- All you need to bring to class is a towel, and appropriate clothing. We'll supply the rest.
If you'd prefer to bring your own mat, no problem. We have one for you if you ever forget it.
If you'd like to bring a drink bottle, go for it. We have a filtered water cooler in the studio if you run dry.
